MORE ABOUT ME...

Areas of interest (gardening): General landscaping and flowerbeds, although I've become more involved with heirloom vegetables over the past few years. Mostly anything that keeps me dirty!

My volunteer activities include: Over the winter I help organize the heirloom veggies and prepare for the Spring plant sale at RBG(selecting varieties, researching and writing info sheets, etc). During the growing season I oversee the maintenance of the heirloom veggie plots at the Hort Center (this is a great MGV project as I need lots of help!!!). I also have a great group of special ed kids from Craig who come in once/week during the school year to help me garden at RBG. Member of the RBG Volunteer Committee.

I've been busy the past few weeks looking into the veggies we will grow at RBG Hort Center this Spring and also at the Farm. We are growing 100 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, 25 varieties each of heirloom sweet peppers and pole beans, 25 varieties each of basil and hot peppers. The list of these will be posted on the RBG website in the next several weeks. Plants (and bean seeds) will all be available for purchase at the RBG Spring Plant Sale, along with the daylilies that the MGV will be dividing before the sale.
It's very hard, though, to look through the catalogs at these delicious tomatoes and peppers, et al, and know I can't eat them for many months to come!!
The MGV have some big plans as to what to do with all these veggies this summer. The Garden Festival is one outlet, distribution to food stamp recipients is being explored, perhaps Kristine will reprise her Pepper Road Show from last year. Anyone with other thoughts or ideas please share! And of course, those who help maintain these gardens get to reap the benefits, so to speak!
Do you find this valuable?
